Income Tax

Income tax return filing, done by a Chartered Accountant

Software can file a simple return. What it cannot do is notice that your capital gain has been computed on the wrong base cost, or that the exemption you have claimed needs a document you do not have yet. That is the difference between a return being filed and a return being correct.

When you want a CA rather than an app

You sold property, shares or land this year

Capital gains are where most returns go wrong, and where the tax at stake is largest. The computation depends on cost, holding period, improvements and which exemption applies.

You have business or professional income

Books, expenses, depreciation and advance tax all interact. What you can legitimately claim depends on how the income is classified in the first place.

You have foreign income, foreign assets or NRI status

Residential status decides what has to be declared. Getting it wrong is one of the more common reasons a return gets picked up later.

Last year's return got a notice, or was defective

A return filed on top of an unresolved problem tends to repeat it. Worth sorting out the earlier year at the same time.

What is actually involved

  1. Form 16, AIS and 26AS are read together

Mismatches between these three are the single most common trigger for an income tax notice. They get reconciled before anything is filed, not after.

  2. Income is classified correctly

The head your income sits under decides the rate, the deductions available and the return form itself. This is a judgement, not a dropdown.

  3. Deductions and exemptions are checked against documents

Anything claimed should be supportable if it is ever questioned. If a proof is missing, you will be told before the claim is made rather than afterwards.

  4. The return is reviewed before filing

A second read of the computation, by the CA, before submission.

  5. You get the acknowledgement and a note on what to keep

Along with a short list of the documents worth retaining for this particular return, and for how long.

What we will need from you

  • PAN and Aadhaar
  • Form 16, if salaried

  • Form 26AS and AIS (downloadable from the portal)
  • Capital gains statements, or the sale deed if property was sold
  • Rent receipts, or the home loan interest certificate
  • Investment proofs — 80C, 80D and any others claimed
  • Business books and GST returns, if applicable

Do not send documents to anyone before you have spoken to them. If you would like a first look at your situation, call first and send afterwards.

Questions people ask first

What is the deadline for filing?

For AY 2026-27, the regular deadline has passed — but a belated or revised return can still be filed until 31 December 2026. If your accounts require audit, the tax audit report is due by 30 September and the return by 31 October 2026. Advance tax instalments fall due on 15 September, 15 December and 15 March. If you have missed a deadline, call — filing late is still considerably better than not filing.

Can you file returns for previous years?

Belated and updated returns can be filed within the limits the Income Tax Act allows, and those limits depend on the year in question. Call with the specific year and you will get a straight answer on whether it is still possible.

What if I have already received a notice?

That is handled separately and it is time-sensitive, because notices carry deadlines. Send it across and it will be read the same working day.

Do I need to visit the office?

No. Most returns are handled over WhatsApp and email. If you would prefer to sit down and go through it, the Gurgaon and New Delhi offices are both open for appointments.

How long does it take?

A straightforward salaried return is usually filed within a couple of working days of receiving complete documents. Cases involving capital gains or business income take longer, because the computation is the work.

Not sure which return applies to you?

That is a normal place to start. Call and describe your income for the year in plain terms — you will get a clear answer on which return, what is needed, and what it will cost.
